Netherlands -- After being denied by district court to sail solo around the world and subsequently assigned to supervised care of child services, Laura Dekker, a 14 year old teen sailor, has gone missing.
The young sailor, determined to travel the world alone by boat, had the support of her father for the adventure. The 14 year old's dream was to be the youngest person to sail the world alone, but having been denied by Dutch courts, has gone missing.
$5000 was reported to have been withdrawn for her bank account. Her boat remains docked.
The local police have stated that they don't believe a crime is involved, but are concerned for her well-being as she is just a teen.
Laura Dekker, who is reported to have been born on a boat in New Zealand, holds dual citizenship in Netherlands and the aforementioned. She allegedly threatened to return to New Zealand if her travel attempts were denied.
BBC reports that Dekker had planned to set sail in September. She is an experienced sailor and has four years of solo sailing experience.
Currently, the world record holder is a 17 year old boy from the UK that made the solo trip in August.
