article image'Honest Ed's' continues its tradition of exuberance in Toronto Special

By Andrew Moran     Dec 12, 2009 in Business
Honest Ed's is the most well-known discount store in downtown Toronto and quite possibly in Canada. The company opened up in 1948 and its famous owner, Ed Mirvish, oversaw operations until his death two years ago.
On Saturday, Honest Ed's held a Mirvish Village Open Door House Party and continued business as usual at the corner of Bathurst Street and Bloor Street with thousands of Torontonians passing by the giant famous landmark and signs.
Honest Ed’s contains thousands of items at some of the lowest prices you’ll see in the Greater Toronto Area ranging from food to cooking ware to clothing to just about anything you can think of. Yes, you can even get a Chinese hutch for $24,000!
Between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Mirvish Village held a special holiday celebration with shops, galleries, restaurants, vendors, bistros and a lot of other activities for residents in the Annex area.
Every year, the 61-year-old company throws a certain kind of festival or event for Torontonians.

"Honest Ed's" is one of the most famous businesses in the history of Toronto and mostly because of its founder Ed Mirvish.
Honest Ed’s was founded by Ed Mirvish, one of the most famous businessmen in the world of restaurants and entertainment. Mirvish, who gave away free turkeys before Christmas and threw large birthdays for himself from 1998 until his death in 2007, suffered from heavy competition from dollar stores and retail outlet stores such as Wal-Mart.
Honest Ed’s is covered in 23,000 light bulbs with an interior decor containing old movie posters and photographs of actors from the old Golden Age of Hollywood. He even has photos of actors with signatures and messages to Mirvish like star of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Dial M for Murder” Robert Cummings.
