A woman who was walking her dog was run down and killed in Burnaby, B.C. early Thursday. Police had no idea who she was. But witnesses had seen a dog running away. Police got a call about a dog tied to a pole. The dog had run home.
BURNABY, B.C. – Tracking down a dog helped police identify a woman who died early Thursday morning while crossing the road at Imperial Avenue in Burnaby.
The woman was walking her dog when she was struck by a large white van. Police were told by witnesses the woman’s dog ran away when the accident happened, said Burnaby RCMP spokesman Cpl. Ted De Jager.
“We got a call that a dog was tied to a pole and a member went down and rang some bells and a resident came out and identified the dog as belonging to the woman,” said De Jager.
“She was walking the dog and crossing Imperial with the dog, witnesses saw the dog run from the scene and as dogs are apt to do it went straight home,” De Jager said.
He said the dog was found tied to a pole at the apartment where it had lived with its master. The location was just 500 metres from the scene of the accident.
The woman was taken to hospital following the crash at Imperial and Marlborough Street but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A large work van left the scene following the accident but police received a call from the owner who was helped by a friend get in touch with cops.
De Jager said police had finished interviewing the driver of the van and a decision on charges will be made by crown counsel.
Police have not released the victim’s name.
