Lieutenant Governor and son of former Mayor Moon Landrieu, Mitch Landrieu, has announced he will run for Mayor of New Orleans, which is the third time he has done so.
Mitch Landrieu, Lieutenant Governor of New Orleans and brother to Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu, announced on Tuesday that he will run for Mayor of New Orleans, according to
CNN. Landrieu ran for Mayor in 1994 and in 2006 but lost both times.
The Democratic official posted an online video announcing his candidacy. Landrieu said if he was elected he plans to create jobs, improve schools and clean up the streets of New Orleans by making them safer, which are the same positions he held in 2006.
“I love New Orleans with all my heart and all my soul. It's where I grew up and where I'm raising my family. And I think anyone who loves this city like I do, understands that when New Orleans calls, you have to answer. She just won't let you go."
But Landrieu did plea for help from the public, “I'm going to need your help. We've got a future to create and a city to rebuild.”
NOLA.com reports that he also made the announcement at Café Reconcile at around 11:30 on Tuesday morning with supporters of Landrieu waving white handkerchiefs and wearing “Landrieu for Mayor” stickers from his 2006 campaign.
However, Landrieu did not plan to run for Mayor during the summer, notes
WDSU. Nevertheless, he joins eight other major candidates with the official qualifying beginning on Wednesday and coming to an end on Friday.
Potential opponents include State Senator Ed Murray, former civil rights judge Nadine Ramsay, comedian Jonah Bascle and a list of others.
If Landrieu is elected then he will be the first white Mayor since his father left office in 1978.
