One of Indy's most popular drivers, Danica Patrick, will be officially making the jump to NASCAR. While she will start out in the ARCA Series and the Nationwide Series the hope is she will make the jump to the Sprint Cup sooner than later.
Yahoo Sports is reporting that Danica Patrick will be moving to NASCAR. Widely considered one of the most recognizable faces in racing, there has been speculation for a number of years that she would move from the Indy Racing League to NASCAR. Not the speculation is over, and people can start to wonder how well she will actually do.
Patrick has sponsors, has opportunities, has a ride with Indy but now she is putting it all on the line to make the move. Yahoo points out that really she is putting her brand in jeopardy. She has been a top-five driver for the Indy League and now she is switching over to race in a much small league. Yes, you did see that right, a much smaller league because she will not be racing in the Sprint Cup Series, rather she will start in the ARCA Series. If she earns her license then she would be allowed to compete in the Nationwide Series.
Yahoo is speculating that Patrick will need at a minimum 2 years in what it considers the “minor leagues” and that is figuring that she will race on the Nationwide series schedule a little bit in 2010. Based on what Juan Pablo Montoya was able to do it took him three years and he is considered one of the best drivers in the world. Just the same Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti, who both won Indy 500s, something Patrick has not done, have managed any success in NASCAR.
Patrick was quoted as saying, “I’ve always thought that the most important thing for me in my career is that I go with my guy and I go with what I want and not worry about the rest. Now my curiosity is there and I’d like to just try it, and I’d like to see how I get on with the cars. I just think the racing looks fun.”
Apparently Dale Earnhardt agrees as she has reportedly signed with Junior’s team. From the time-line it appears it is going to be a long time until we see here lines up against Jimmie Johnson and the rest of the big names in NASCAR. The odds are heavily stacked against her though and because of that according to Jay Hart of Yahoo, “She deserves credit for trying.”
