A Japanese brewer, Sapporo Breweries Ltd, is offering a limited volume of Sapporo Space Barley, a new beer using barley whose seeds are from space.
In the press release, the brewer said the barley is grown from seeds brought to outer space under a joint project with the Russian Academy of Science and Japan's Okayama University. These seeds were stored for five months in the Russian module of the International Space Station.
The company has 250 sets for sale (there are six, 330 ml bottles per set) available only only.
While the average price for beer in Japan is about 202 yen ($2.30 USD) per bottle, the "space barley" will cost about 3,333 yen ($37 USD).
The beer will be delivered to customers in late January and proceeds from sales will be used to promote science education, said Sapporo.
