After seven consecutive Barclays Premier League draws, Manchester City proved they were far better than they had shown by defeating Chelsea, 2-1.
In what will be one of the best games of the season, Manchester City defeated league leader Chelsea, 2-1, in a game which saw a potential game tying penalty kick and a total of seven yellow cards given out.
Only seven minutes into the game Chelsea was on the attack getting two shots in quick succession on goal, both blocked by City goalie Shay Given, only to have the second deflection bounce off Emmanuel Adebayor's back and into his own goal.
Unlike the past seven games City fought back building momentum and creating opportunities until Adebayor struck back using his left foot from four yards out to draw even with Chelsea. The lead up to the goal involved a game of pinball in which there was the question of handball, but the referees ruled it unintentional and the goal counted.
The second half started with the score tied 1-1, but City maintained their first half momentum keeping Chelsea's defence on their heels in the face of City's strikers. After a boot in the back from Carvalho on Carlos Tevez, City was given a free kick within the "D". After minutes of jawing and pushing Tevez put City ahead 2-1 with a sensation shot that narrowly missed Joleon Lescott and found its way into the back of the goal, electrifying the record crowd at City of Manchester Stadium.
Chelsea refused to go away quietly however, they attacked relentlessly for the remaining part of the game that saw the intensity levels on both sides skyrocket. Players were going down injured left and right, tackles were becoming increasingly vicious until Nedum Onuoha was called for a foul inside the penalty ball giving Chelsea a penalty kick.
The penalty kick was blocked by City goalkeeper Shay Given solidifying City's lead with only seven minutes remaining. Chelsea's momentum from seconds earlier disappeared and despite spirited attacks City was able to hold onto the lead and pick up a hard fought victory.
