Roy Jones Jr was knocked out in the first round of his fight with Danny Green in Australia in his attempt to capture the cruiser weight title belt.
Future hall of fame boxer Roy Jones Jr was knocked out in the first round of his fight with Danny Green in Green's hometown of Australia Wednesday December 2nd.
This was the first time Roy decided to fight abroad since his highly controversial loss in the 1988 Seoul Olympics where many experts were outraged by the highly suspected loss to a native Korean fighter where Jones clearly dominated the Korean for the entire fight.
Roy at the age of 40 was not the same prime Roy Jones Jr who could get away with virtually anything he desired by the speed of his legs, hands, and reflexes.
It has been reported that the Roy Jones Jr vs Danny Green fight was the biggest fight in all of Australia history and just as the announcer said it will be 36 minutes long Roy was knocked down.
Danny Green prior to the fight had talked about a particular punch that he had planned on landing on Jones that he felt he could execute due to Roy's vulnerable fighting stance. It was evident that Green's plan worked as Jones was quickly knocked down and then TKO'd as the referee waived off the fight in the first round.
A big right hand to the top of Roy's head sent him crashing down to the canvas and as he picked himself up he was not on secure legs as he just covered up and had no answer to the flurry of punches by Green forcing the referee to waive off the fight.
Danny Green the cruiser weight champion improves his record to 28(25)-3 and becomes the third fighter to knock out Roy with Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson.
Roy Jones now falls to a record of 54(40)-6 and is for once finally contemplating retirement. Jones is a former middle weight champion, super middle weight champion, light heavy weight champion and even heavy weight champion and Wednesday was attempting to capture his first cruiser weight title.
For most of his career from the late 1990's to 2004 Roy Jones was highly recognized as the pound for pound number one fighter in the world making it look easy with his superior speed, power, and counter punching.
But as he got older with age his ring age seemed to get even older as his speed started to diminish and his reflexes which would save him from any punishment or ever getting hit cleanly began to fail him.
Many experts cite his body going up to heavy weight of 210 lbs plus of muscle and then only months later shedding off the muscle to fight at 175 lbs for the light heavy weight title against Antonio Tarver as the reason why Roy’s body was never the same.
Veteran rival Bernard Hopkins was slated to have his 17 year long over due rematch with Jones early next year was optimistic and still open to fighting Jones as he stated that Jones was still on his feet when the fight was stopped.
