Five British sailors detained by Iran after drifting into Iranian waters have been released by the Revolutionary Guard and are safely on their way to Dubai.
Iranian state radio announced this morning the sailors were being released and were to be towed back into international waters where they would be met by vessels of the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. The captive sailors were part of the Sail Bahrain yachting team and were originally heading towards Dubai before suffering rudder problems.
Following the announcement the international community erupted with happiness, "We are all absolutely thrilled with the news. It has been an extremely worrying time for all of us and particularly for the families and loved ones of those on board," said Andrew Pindar OBE, Sail Bahrain's chairman, in a statement.
Iran was praised for the release by British Foreign Secretary, "I think this is just a straightforward matter: it's not a significant matter; it's not a political matter; I don't believe that there's any wider significance. It shows that diplomacy can work."
