article imageBritish Sailors Detained by Iran

By Aaron Jefferson     Dec 1, 2009 in Politics
After straying into Iranian waters, five British sailors were seized by the Iranian security forces and are now being detained by the Iranian government.
The sailors were en route to Dubai and according to one sailors father, they were experiencing rudder problems suggesting the boat may have drifted into Iranian waters near the island of Sirri. It is believed the boat drifted about 500 yards into Iranian waters where they were boarded by Iranian security forces. After inspecting the boat the young sailors were told they were free to go.
However, engine troubles plagued the boat and the boat was once boarded as it continued to drift into Iranian waters. It is unknown at this time why the sailors were originally allowed to go free, but given the recent tension between the West and Iran, the sailors may serve a political purpose.
The international community and the five sailors are awaiting a statement from the Iranian government, but British Foreign Secretary David Miliband hopes to resolve the matter quickly.
"These are five civilians. They are yachtsmen. They were going about their sport," Mr Miliband said. "It seems they may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters. We look forward to the Iranian Government dealing with this promptly ... There's certainly no confrontation or argument."
