Director of "Rosemary's Baby" and Chinatown," Roman Polanski, who was arrested for his 1970s sex charge, will likely be released on bail after he coughed up $4.49 million.
Roman Polanski’s request to be released has been granted by the Swiss Federal Criminal Court but he will be kept under house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss chalet, according to the
Associated Press. Polanski was
arrested in September on his way to a Zurich film festival that was honoring the 76-year-old filmmaker for his 1970s sex charge in which he pleaded guilty.
Ministry spokesperson Folco Galli said, “The 76-year-old appellant is married and the father of two minors. It can be assumed that as a responsible father he will, especially in view of his advanced age, attach greater importance to the financial security of his family than a younger person.”
Reuters is reporting that the Swiss Justice Ministry will not release Polanski immediately and the Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said she sees no reason to appeal the court’s decision.
Last month, the courts rejected Polanski’s offer, which the director wanted to give up half of his personal wealth. The Swiss court stated, notes the
Guardian, that the amount was large enough this time to counterbalance the high flight risk that he poses while he fights against being extradited to the United States.
Currently, his latest film,
“The Ghost” starring Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor, is in post-production, however Polanski is instructing the picture to be completed as insteded.
