article imageOntario prisoner escapes, considered armed and dangerous

By Bob Gordon     Nov 24, 2009 in Crime
Police in Hamilton, Ontario, are seeking a prisoner who was freed by two armed accomplices on a trip from the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre to Hamilton General Hospital in Hamilton at noon today.
Two men wearing masks pulled guns on a pair of jail guards in a bold breakout of a prisoner at Hamilton General Hospital three hours ago.
The guards were escorting a prisoner from Hamilton General Hospital when they were jumped by the pair. The attackers wore surgical masks and had hoodies pulled down low over their faces.
They freed the prisoner – Fawad Ahmed Nouri, 25 – and raced from the hospital parking lot in the Correctional Service of Ontario van, hitting an ambulance as they fled.
At Birge Street and Victoria Avenue North, a few blocks southeast of the hospital, the three abandoned the jail van. They were last seen heading east on Birge Street in a silver Hyundai Tiberon.
Nouri had been in custody since January after a failed robbery at a Tim Horton's on Upper James Street in Hamilton resulted in a gunfight between Hamilton police, Nouri and his accomplice 26-year-old Todd Fenty.
Nouri was initially, charged with robbery, firearms offenses, and wearing a disguise during the conduct of a crime. Later police added another 36 charges relating to the nine customers of the coffee shop who were threatened with weapons and detained during the course of the robbery.
Numerous witnesses outside the coffee shop observed the robbery and called 911. The police failed to arrive in time to interrupt the robbery, but in time to pursue the robbers as they fled. A high-speed chase ended when the robbers crashed into a snowbank and were arrested trying to flee on foot. Nouri was shot in the arm during the foot pursuit. He was waiting to go to trial for these matters when he escaped earlier today.
The 25-year-old Nouri is described by police as 6' 1" and 163 pounds. Nouri and his two accomplices are all identified as being of "Middle Eastern descent." Police are asking anyone with information about Nouri, his whereabouts or his accomplices, to call 911.
DJ will continue to report on this story as it develops.
