More than 240 people have been rescued after a ferry sank off the coast of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. The disaster has claimed the lives of at least 25 people, officials say.
The
search continues for survivors after the ferry sank in rough waters. The amount of people still missing is unknown.
A second ferry nearby is stranded as it ran aground in the same rough waters. Officials say that all the passengers on that ferry are safe.
Officials on the scene of the sunken ferry say that they have recovered 25 bodies, two of whom were children. A total of 243 people were rescued after the Dumai Express 10 passenger ferry sank.
There is confusion as to how many people were actually on board at the time of disaster. Police and Navy officials say that the ferry's manifest lists 228 people in total, 15 of whom were children and 14 crew members.
However, more than the listed 228 have already been rescued.
The ferry has the capacity to carry 273 passengers but overloading of passengers is common on these ferry's.
