On one website, 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante listed her hobbies as "killing people" and "cutting." It may have sounded like teenage boasting, but authorities say she fulfilled her words
Even as new details emerge about the teenager charged with killing 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, many facts remain well hidden by police and the prosecution, and could only emerge should Bustamante go to trial.
Bustamante, who lead police to Olten's body last month, has been living in juvenile protection since but was certified Wednesday as an adult and indicted on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. According to the charges, Bustamante strangled, then stabbed Olten.
Online court records showed Thursday that a public defender assigned to represent Bustamante filed a motion seeking to have her placed in a state hospital for immediate mental health treatment.
On a Youtube video that has since been taken down, but was seen by the Associated Press, Alyssa professed her hobbies were 'cutting herself', and 'killing people'. Some time ago, Bustamante had also posted a Youtube video showing the 15 year old intentionally shocking herself on an electrified fence, and convincing her two younger brothers to try it as well.
In court on Wednesday, a police officer testified that Bustamante had confessed to digging two holes to be used as a grave, then killing Elizabeth five days later without provocation because she wanted to know what it felt like. The digging of the holes in advance of the killing enabled the state to charge that the act was pre-meditated.
The many questions still surrounding the case, such as why two holes were dug aren't expected to be answered until, and only if Bustamante goes to trial either in a few months, or possibly a year. Not until then would witnesses be called to explain the details and circumstances of the crime.
However, because Bustamante lead the police to Olten's body, there is speculation that the 15 year old could plead guilty, and forever leave some explanations in the dark.
