The list released from Forbes magazine ranks the top ten actors and actresses who bring in salaries higher than they should based on how their movies perform at the box office.
The list, put together by Forbes magazine took into account the 100 most successful stars in Hollywood. To meet this criteria, these actors must have had at least three films in the past five years opening in over 500 theaters. Further calculations were done in terms of a star's salary in comparison with the budget of the film itself.
No. 1: Will Ferrell - He started off well in his big screen transition with films like Elf and Talladega Nights. However, with the 2009 release of Land of the Lost, only $65 million of the $100 million budget was regained with ticket sales. Forbes reports that for every $1 Ferrell earned from his films, his films themselves only earned an average of $3.29.
No. 2: Ewen McGregor - Despite his success in films like the new Star Wars franchise, McGregor hasn't had as much success recently. For every $1 McGregor earned from his films, his films themselves only earned an average of $3.75.
No. 3: Billy Bob Thornton - Even though Thornton isn't making the salary that say Will Ferrell is, he is known for having a string of box-office flops like Mr. Woodcock and The Astronaut Farmer. For every $1 he earns from his films, his films themselves earned an average of $4.
No. 4: Eddie Murphy - He lands somewhat surprisingly high on the list with successful films like Dr. Doolittle and The Nutty Professor under his belt. However, the success of those films wasn't enough to surpass the recent flops like Imagine That and Meet Dave that Murphy brought to the box office. For every $1 he earns from his films, his films themselves earned an average of $4.43.
No. 5: Ice Cube - Films like Barbershop and Are We There Yet? have brought Ice Cube to the forefront of cinema, but his recent films such as The Longshots have bombed completely. For every $1 he earns from his films, his films themselves earned an average of $4.77.
Other offenders
No. 6: Tom Cruise - For every $1 he was paid, his films earned an average of $7.19.
No. 7: Drew Barrymore - For every $1 she was paid, her films earned an average of $7.43.
No. 8: Leonardo DiCaprio - For every $1 he was paid, his films earned an average of $7.52.
No. 9: Samuel L. Jackson - For every $1 he was paid, his films earned an average of $8.59.
No. 10: Jim Carrey - For every $1 he was paid, his films earned an average of $8.62.
