The Toronto Transit Commission's Yonge-University subway line was shutdown between Eglinton station and Bloor station because of a bridge's collapse.
In less than 24 hours, Toronto transit riders experienced two major problems with the TTC: 1) across the board fare hikes 2) subway shutdown for hours during rush hour.
On Wednesday, initial reports revealed that the Yonge-University subway line between stations Eglinton and Bloor were shutdown due to a fear that a 22-meter concrete slab could possibly fall onto the tracks, according to one TTC Operator who told Digital Journal at Davisville subway station.
However, City News later confirmed that actually outside contractors accidentally cut into the subway tunnel. The contractors were working on Jackes Avenue, which forced the TTC to bring in engineers in between Yonge Street and Bloor Street. Ross stated on Wednesday evening, "They were doing road cuts with road saws, not realizing that the tunnel was just below them. They cut deep into the tunnel and we are now concerned that that slab of concrete they've cut could fall into the tunnel."
Tens of thousands of Toronto commuters were stranded and either had to walk or take a very crowded shuttle bus that would take riders to their destinations along Yonge Street. One man told Digital Journal that he could very well be fired because he was going to be late once again. He chanted as he walked away, in very vulgar terms, “You TTC always make me late and now you’re going to get me fired."

One person actually told Digital Journal that they think it was actually a conspiracy to show how efficient their buses are and how they could handle a disaster right after their decision to increase all the fares.
In the end, a lot of transit riders were furious as they stood at bus stops along Yonge Street and just seeing bus after bus filled to maximum capacity. What will the TTC do next?
