A twenty-two year old Phoenix man has been seriously injured after falling from a butte at Papago Park in east Phoenix yesterday.
According to Phoenix Fire Department Captain, Dorian Jackson, the hiker had apparently climbed about 180 feet up the side of the butte, when he lost his footing, The hiker tumbled approximately thirty feet, striking his head and shoulder, sustaining the injuries. The man is also being treated for a possible fractured ankle.
The hiker was quickly rescued by the Phoenix Fire Dept., which then transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment.
Injuries at Papago Park are on the rise. The sprawling park, located on rough desert terrain between the cities of Phoenix and Tempe, contains several craggy buttes ideal for climbers and hikers. In recent months, however, a number of visitors to the park have had to seek medical treatment after sustaining injuries while hiking and climbing at the park.
The name of the injured hiker has not been released.
