The tables were turned on burglars in Toledo, Ohio, who thought they were going for gold jewelry, but came away with brass.
The burglars smashed-and-grabbed their way into a jewelry store and got away with bogus gold rings used for display purposes only.
Instead of the real thing, the cases were filled with dealer sample rings that are styled like the real jewelry and are made of brass. For safety sake, the brass jewelry is frequently used by jewelry stores, making displays look like thousands of dollars worth of the real thing.
Henry Triplett, owner of
Henry’s Jewelers, said the jewelry heist gone wrong for the burglars would come as a surprise to the thieves when they go to fence them, since the brass rings they stole are barely worth 25-cents each.
Triplett said the real cost to him will be the replacement costs of his store’s front window and glass that was shattered on 13 display cases.
