The race is on to see who will partner Lewis Hamilton at McLaren for the 2010 F1 Grand Prix season. Will it be Kimi Raikkonen the 2007 World Champion or Jenson Button the 2009 World Champion?
Recently, Button himself and representatives of Raikkonen have enjoyed visits to McLaren’s technology centre in Woking, Surrey in the UK.
According to The Guardian newspaper in the UK, it is rumoured that McLaren would prefer to have the British dream team of Hamilton and Button driving for them next season. It is understood that Button would earn far more at McLaren than he currently does at Brawn, the team he won the F1 title with in 2009. Brawn is in the process of being taken over by Mercedes Benz.
Raikkonen was bought out of the final year of his contract by Ferrari, so that the Italian team could acquire the services of Fernando Alonso. Raikkonen did drive for McLaren before moving to Ferrari. If he doesn’t gain a seat for the F1 season in 2010, it’s thought that Kimi will take part in the world rally championships instead, where until recently Scandinavians have excelled.
Whoever does get the coveted seat in the other McLaren car will be up against Hamilton, the 2008 F1 World Champion regarded by many as the fastest driver in the sport. He is considered favourite for the 2010 F1 title and has been at McLaren for 3 years. McLaren is really his team and is run to suit Lewis’s style, so that either Raikkonen or Button will find it difficult to make their mark. Another former World Champion, Fernando Alonso, couldn’t cope with this situation and left as soon as he could to rejoin Renault.
