An annual report issued by the Institute of International Education shows a growing number of Chinese students are choosing American universities as the destination for their further education.
China sent 98,510 students to the U.S. in 2008, soaring 21 percent from the previous year, while its neighbor India remained the leading country for the origin of international students for the eighth year. A total of 103,260 students went from India which is a nine percent increase from 2007, according to the report.
“I think we’re going to be seeing 100,000 students from each for years to come, with an increasing share of them being undergraduates,” Peggy Blumenthal, executive vice president of the Institute of International Education told the New York Times.
Among all the international students last year, undergraduate enrollment rose 11 percent from the 2002-3 academic year – the past peak enrollment year – while the graduate enrollment only rose two percent.
The shift was especially obvious in China; last year 26,275 undergraduates flew to the U.S., which is almost triple what it was five years ago. Graduates were up 11 percent, from 50,976 to 57,451.
The shift directly leads to another change, said Blumenthal. “It used to be that they were all in the graduate science departments," she said. But now, more and more Chinese parents are willing to invest their growing disposable income in the family's only child to have a full American college education thanks to the one-child policy.
International students are also able to contribute to the recovery of the U.S. economy because " they shop at the local Wal-Mart, rent rooms and buy food," said Allan E. Goodman, president of the institute, adding many American universities are increasing their international recruitment.
Over all, the number of international students at colleges and universities in the U.S. reached to a record high of 671,616 in the 2008-9 year.
