The Christmas season is quickly approaching and Washington is certainly in the holiday spirit as they are asking Americans to help pay off the national debt by donating to the Treasury.
As the holiday season approaches, Washington is hoping that Americans will be in the Christmas spirit over the next several weeks as the United States Treasury is asking their citizens to donate whatever amount they can to help pay off the $12 trillion national debt, according to Reuters.
Are you interested? Well, the Treasury released the information on their website and all you have to do is send a gift or a check payable to the Bureau of Public Debt. Treasury spokesperson Kim Treat said that a lot of people send checks and in the last fiscal year it added up to nearly $3 million, which is the largest since 1996.
Majority of the reasons for donating whatever they have is either patriotism or a form of gratitude by immigrants for allowing them into their country. The largest single donation ever made, according to Mckayla Barden, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Public Debt, was $3.5 million.
WHNT News 19 reports that a lot of the people they spoke to have never heard of the 1961 law, which allows the government to accept donations to pay down the debt and they’re even tax deductible.
Jeff Jauken told WHNT, “I think it's really wild. The government takes enough of our money. The government takes enough of our money, and they expect us to send them extra money to pay off the debt. That is their responsibility to pay down.”
According to an unscientific CNN web poll, 79 per cent would not donate any money to the US government.
Jonathan Winkler, a retired American writer who lives in Ottawa, told Digital Journal, in an e-mail correspondence, that the US government is actually trying to steal more from the taxpayer. The income tax is already illegal and immoral, says Winkler. “The government taxes you into oblivion, devalues your money and now they want you to say ‘thank you sir now may I give you some more money?’ It’s absolutely ridiculous and I am shocked by the figure that $3 million was given to the Treasury.” He concluded asking the question, “How much does Obama donate to the Treasury?”
The United States is presently facing a $12 trillion national debt, $1.4 trillion budget deficit and unfunded liabilities of $106 trillion.
