Missing girl's body found in North Carolina

By KJ Mullins     Nov 16, 2009 in Crime
The body of young Shaniya Davis, 5, has been found in an area south of Sanford, North Carolina. The child was last seen alive being carried into a hotel room.
Shaniya's body was found about seven miles from the location of the hotel.
Hotel surveillance video showed Mario McNeill, 29, taking the child into the room. He turned himself into police Thursday night, confessing to have taken the child. His attorney told reporters that even though his client confessed he would be pleading not guilty.
Antoinette Davis, mother of Shaniya, was arrested Saturday. She has been charged with human trafficking, prostitution and felony child abuse.
Sergeant McIntosh of the Fayetteville police told me that reports of Shaniya Davis being found are not confirmed at this time.
Sergeant Bass-Caine also with the Fayetteville PD told me that she can not confirm the death of Davis.
"There was a body found but the identity has yet to be confirmed. At this time the department's focus is on confirming the identity of the body."
It is now being reported by WRAL that a tip led the police to the scene. Police and volunteers searched the area Monday morning left in the tip. The group then moved south of the area after noon.
I spoke to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department about the human trafficking aspect to this case. Sergeant Britt had no comment but an officer who did not give his name said:
"I'm not going to say that there is a human trafficking problem in Fayetteville." The officer quickly silenced and then handed the phone off to a superior.
