According to his agent Janet Glass, actor Edward Woodward died earlier today at the age of 79. Woodward was in hospital at the time of death.
Woodward was known best for his part in
The Wicker Man and for his appearance in
Callan. Later on in his career he was well known for his role in
The Equalizer.
His agent said he was in ill health for some time and his friends and family were with him when he died.
The actor was born in Croydon but was currently living in Hawker's Grove which is close to Padstow in Cornwall. He was a patient at the Royal Cornwall Hospital when he died.
His last role was in
Eastenders, the soap broadcast on the BBC. Actors and producers from the series have spoken of their sadness on hearing the news.
Woodward was married to actress Michele Dotrice and the couple had four
children.
Speaking to
Sky News, Woodward's agent Janet Glass said, "He was a superb human being as well as an amazing actor. He was very much loved."
Woodward was awarded an OBE in 1980 and won a Golden Globe for his part in
The Equalizer. He also received an Emmy for his performance in
Remembering World War II.
The actor had been working on his autobiography.
