article imageTwo bloggers from Azerbaijan jailed for satirical video

By Maciej Lewandowski     Nov 14, 2009 in World
Two young bloggers from Azerbaijan, Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade, were sentenced to jail on Nov. 11. They were arrested in July after a fight at a restaurant in Baku and formally charged with "hooliganism."
Emin Milli was sentenced to two years in prison and Adnan Hajizade got two-and-a-half years.
According to Human Rights Watch the sentence has nothing to do with their fighting. Instead it's connected to a "Donkey video" posted on YouTube. In that video, which is obviously a joke with the Azerbaijani regime, a donkey holds a news conference.
Both bloggers were posting satirical posts on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
They were jailed despite a letter that was sent to the President of Azerbaijan requesting a fair trail.
South Caucasus researcher at Human Rights Watch, Giorgi Gogia, said:
The imprisonment of Milli and Adnan sends a chilling message to bloggers and any sharp government critic in Azerbaijan. It reflects growing government hostility towards the freedom of expression.
