A 69-year-old Welshman was caught chatting online with his 61-years-old wife who he believed was a schoolgirl ready to have sex with him.
Cheryl became suspicious around one year ago, wondering why her husband was spending so much time in front of his computer screen. She eventually realized he was chatting up women online, alleging he was targeting teenage girls.
Cheryl decided to try to make contact with him on the Internet, acting as a schoolgirl. They were chatting online from their family home, each from a separate room.
Cheryl knew she was talking to her husband, while he believed he was making plans to have sex with a 14-year-old-girl. The whole story, described in detail by
Wales Online, finished at a police station and then in court.
The husband was ordered to attend a programme for sex offenders and he was banned from contacting children on the Internet. He will also have to be registered as a sex offender.
His wife was praised by the director of of the children's charity
Kidscape. Claude Knights, who works with the organization, told the
Guardian:
The offences that he has committed are very serious indeed and his wife must be commended for the active part that she played in bringing him to justice. This is yet another case that points to the risks posed to young people by online sexual predators. There is a strong message to parents to ensure that their children know they must never email, chat or text message with strangers. Most importantly it is never safe to arrange offline meetings with people that they have met online.
