Veteran Boston Red Sox Catcher Jason Varitek exercised his club option for 2010 and will return to the team where he has won 2 World Series rings with.
On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox management announced that Jason Varitek exercised his club option worth $3 million for 2010 and will return to the team’s line-up, according to
ESPN. The team who has won two World Series rings since 2004 made the decision not to pick up their $5 million team option on Varitek, who hit .209 during the 2009 season.
General Manager Theo Epstein told reporters in Chicago, reports
Yahoo! Sports, “We're happy to have Jason back and we look forward to a good year from. He means an awful lot to the organization on and off the field. He helps solidify our catching position also and is a big asset to the pitching staff.”
Varitek has played 13 seasons with the Red Sox.
Epstein also made the decision to sign Victor Martinez, former Cleveland Indians slugger, as their primary catcher. Since being traded by the Seattle Mariners in 1997, he has hit .259, 175 home runs and 705 RBIs. Last year he started 106 games and has started 1,381 games as a catcher for the Red Sox.
