What was thought to be the regular H1N1 Swine Flu vaccination for children Collier County school actually turned out to be a blunder as dozens of students were given the wrong flu shot.
“I was like wow, how did they mess that up?” Said one fifth grader who attends the Communty School of Naples, Zannos Grekos. Children in the Collier County elementary school thought they were getting the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccination but instead they received the flu shot and now the district school board must provide a reason for their error, according to
Naples Daily News.
77 students at the Community School of Naples were given the wrong shot. The mistake was discovered 10 or 15 minutes after giving out the shots but after stopping it for a short while the school resumed administering the H1N1 vaccine to 337 students.
One excuse provided is that both shots come in similar looking boxes.
ABC 7 reports that a nurse packed the wrong box for the school and when the nurses provided the vaccine none of them actually knew what they were giving the children.
Deb Millsap with the Collier County Health Department said, according to
NBC 2, “It is concerning to us, because these are seasoned nurses. No excuse. It was a mistake. We’ve already, starting last night, put into effect training measures that it should never happen again.”
Students will be given the opportunity to have the shot again on Friday.
