The autopsy report on the body of John Alexander Evans is expected today. Cadet Evans was found unconscious in his room shorty after a ten-mile road march on Saturday.
According to a
media release issued by the Virginia Mlitary Institute (VMI) described Evans as a freshman--"member of the Rat class"--from Highland, Maryland who was an International Studies major and a member of the Marine ROTC program.
Regarding the incident itself, the release was terse:
A 4th Class cadet (freshman) collapsed following a training event and was pronounced dead shortly after noon today at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital.
John Alexander Evans, 19, of Highland, Md., collapsed in his Barracks room after completing a 10-mile road march with other members of the Rat Class.
Subsequently, a VMI spokesman has stated that Cadet Evans had no known medical problems and exhibited no signs of stress or discomfort during the road march.
A
funeral service will be held at the St. Louis Catholic Church, in Clarksville on Saturday at 10 a.m.
VMI has committed to a review of its training policies and procedures once the autopsy report is available.
