Ontario's deputy premier and energy minister George Smitherman is set to resign his position on Monday in order to run for the position of Mayor in Toronto.
On Sunday the Globe and Mail learned that Smitherman will resign offically on Monday. Smitherman will be replaced as energy minister by Gerry Phillips. At this time it is not known who will become the new deputy premier of Ontario.
The
Globe and Mail reports:
“I've been thinking about it for a long, long time,” George Smitherman said. “In my mind, in my heart, I'm settled on doing it.”
There has been a public call on
Facebook for Smitherman to run for mayor. Not all of the comments though have been favorable on the group's board.
Smitherman's name has been in the hot seat from the eHealth scandal. He was part of the massive reforms to Ontario's health-care system when he held the position of health minister from 2003 until 2008.
The
Toronto Star quotes Smitherman:
"I love my city, I see such good things happening, but there's a sense of unrealized potential. How do you redress a psyche? Leadership," Smitherman said.
