When the call came in that a shooting was going on at Fort Hood police officer Kimberly Munley sprung into action. Munley was wounded as she took down the gunman accused of killing thirteen at the military base.
On Thursday Munley was taking her vehicle in for maintenance when the call came in. She turned around and headed to the military base, arriving just minutes from the first bullet fired.
She had just arrived when she saw the suspect exiting the Soldier Readiness Processing Center with a gun in his hand. As he ran at the 5'2" police officer firing Munley returned fire.
Even though she was shot in both legs and her wrist she was able to stop the rampage.
The Statesman reports:
"If there was a person there to respond, Kim Munley is the one we would want to be there," Chuck Medley, emergency services director at Fort Hood said. "When you have an active shooter hurting people, our protocol is to move to the threat and eliminate it. That takes some courage and skill."
Munley was as a police officer in nearby Wrightsville Beach from 2000 to 2002 before joining the Army in 2005. She returned to police work a second time in 2008.
Munley underwent a second surgery on Saturday. She is listed in good condition.
