A vaccine that does not contain chemical additive adjuvant is now ready for Ontario women who are pregnant. The 200,000 doses on hand were obtained from Australia.
The chemical free vaccine is recommended for expectant mothers because there are no studies on the effect of adjuvant and embryos. According to the
National Cancer Society adjuvant is a substance used to help boost the immune response to a vaccine so that less vaccine is needed.
The message for pregnant women in Canada has been mixed. When the chemical free vaccine did not arrive in time for vaccine clinics last week health officials advised women who were past the 20 week gestation period and at risk of developing H1N1 to get the adjuvanted version. Prior to that women had been advised to get the adjuvant free version of the vaccine.
