On his way home after the New York Yankees won their 27th World Series title, Manager Joe Girardi stops to help a woman who crashed her car on the Cross County Parkway.
27 year-old Marie Henry of Stratford Connecticut lost control of her car and crashed into a wall along the Parkway. Police said, the crash happened at 2:25 a.m. on the eastbound lanes along a blind curve where the Cross County meets the Hutchinson River Parkway prior to the New Rochelle Road exit. Henry was able to get out of the crashed vehicle and declined to be taken to the hospital.
Police were conducting a checkpoint for intoxicated drivers. Girardi had passed through the checkpoint on the Parkway. Officer Cristiano was working the checkpoint, had congratulated Girardi on his first win as a manager. She didn't expect to see him again that night.
The Journal News reports, a 911 call came through about a car accident a short distance away, and so officers suspended the checkpoint and responded to the crash. Cristiano arrived at the scene where she spotted Girardi.
Cristiano told The Journal News, "He was jumping up and down, trying to flag me down. You don't expect him standing by a car accident trying to help."
According to police, the area is notorious for its blind spots. Girardi had parked his car along the right side of the parkway. He had to run across traffic to get the injured motorist; he put his life at risk.
Girardi told them "he had to get going." Both Cristiano and Henry thanked him and watched him run across traffic again to reach his car.
County Sgt. Thomas McGurn said, "He could have gotten killed. Traffic goes by at 80 mph."
