Local reports from Brazil say a 58-year-old man left his family and friends stunned after he appeared at his own funeral.
The family of Ademir Jorge Goncalves had positively identified his body after an accident claimed his life.
Police later told a newspaper identifying the body was difficult because it was unrecognizable following the car crash.
Mr Goncalves, a bricklayer by trade, was in fact still alive and had been out all night drinking.
The first the 59-year-old heard of his funeral was on Monday when it was already underway.
According to his niece, a number of family members did have concerns as to whether the body was that of Goncalves, but others who knew him had identified it.
The body has since been identified as someone else.
Reports indicate this has happened as many as three or four times in the last few years in Brazil.
A police spokesman told The Guardian, "His mum looked at the body in the casket and thought something was strange. She looked and looked and couldn't believe it was her son. Before long, the walking dead appeared at the funeral. It was a relief."
