Today Maoists in Nepal intensified their protests, railing in the capital and pledged to block district administration offices nationwide.
Tens of thousands of Maoist supporters blockaded local government agencies during their second phase of protests. Waving red flags, they staged a sit-in-protest in front of the Kathmandu Municipality Corporation to oppose president Ram Baran Yadav's earlier decision to reinstate former army chief in May.
Demonstrations are lead by The Unified Communist Party of Nepal. Prachanda, the party chairman, lit a specially designed torch -- to mark the beginning of the nationwide protest, throwing the capital's traffic out of gear during the rush hour, as Chinaview reports.
Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal, quoted by the Earth Times, said:
No one has the courage or power to stop our agitation. The price of trying to stop our protests would be high.
According to the Taiwan News, the protesters are chanting:
Restore people's rule, disband the puppet government!
The Earth Times reports that Nepal's only international airport in Kathmandu is blocked by the demonstrators.
Government offices across the country had been shut down by the strike.
