Republican Dede Scozzafava, who recently dropped out of New York 's 23rd Congressional District special election, has now endorsed Democratic candidate Bill Owens.
Dede Scozzafava, the GOP candidate who dropped out of the race last week, will now endorse her former Democratic rival Bill Owens, according to
Fox News. Scozzafava dropped out of the race after Conservative Party candidate Dan Hoffman had a surge in the polls.
Scozzafava released a statement through the Democratic National Committee on Sunday, “I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same. In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.”
There was a lot of animosity by the Republican Party towards Scozzafava because they believed she was too moderate on the issues. Nevertheless, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee believes,
according to
Fox News, that her endorsement won’t have much of an impact on the results of the election.
The Washington Independent reported that Democratic strategists suggested the election was unwinnable unless Scozzafava endorsed Owens.
As
The Washington Independent further notes, Scozzafava’s husband also endorsed Owens on Sunday.
