On Oct. 30, Canonical Software released the latest version of its Ubuntu operating system. The new system is believed to be the open source response to Windows 7, released by Microsoft last week.
The latest version of Linux-based free operating system Ubuntu - Ubuntu 9.10, codenamed Karmic Koala - is the next step in its direct competition to Microsoft Windows. New Ubuntu is described by its developers, as
faster, smoother more beautiful and introducing your personal cloud
.
Ubuntu is an operating system built by a worldwide team of unpaid volunteers, most of them experienced developers. It contains a web browser, office suite, media applications and instant messaging. Ubuntu is an open-source alternative to Windows and Office, available for free at Ubuntu website.
According to PC Pro, the new operating system
brings evolution rather than revolution, with the latest versions of Firefox 3.5 and OpenOffice included by default. Ubuntu has also finally shipped out the Pidgin instant messaging client for Empathy. The latter is built on Telepathy and brings video-chat and VOIP support to the opearting system.
Estimated 12 million people around the world use Ubuntu, including French police, Wikipedia website and San Francisco International Airport.
