Sony Pictures, the movie company behind the release of Michael Jackson's "This Is it" documentary, say the film has taken in more than $20 million internationally on the day of its release.
The documentary saw its release on Tuesday and features behind-the-scenes footage of what would have been Michael Jackson's final tour.
Sony also announced iot will put forward the documentary for next year's academy awards. If it is accepted, it would be put in the category for Best Picture. The director, Kenny Ortega,
said he thinks Jackson deserves an Oscar.
Family members were among those who attended the premier and the film.
It's set to be shown in cinemas for 14 days. Sony has since said it will continue to show the film if the demand is there.
The film has a run-time of almost two hours and the footage shows Michael Jackson rehearsing some of his biggest hits.
By the end of the week, the documentary will have been seen in cinemas in 110 different countries.
The film is soon to be released on DVD and is already available from some stores on pre-order.
