Breastlight Helps Women Do Their Monthly Breast Exams Special

Once a month women are told to examine their breasts to check for lumps. These exams are important but often forgotten. A new product, Breastlight, could change that.

At the National Women's Show this past weekend, one health product stood - the Breastlight. This product can help a woman spot changes that could indicate cancer. The product is safe for every women in a household to use, the creators claim. The Breastlight is an aid that women can use in the comfort of their own home to view their breast tissue. The light highlights blood vessels that are where tumors form. In a darkened room, that light can show shadows that could be an abnormality that a woman should follow up with their doctor. Breastlight company spokesman Brad Emerson spoke to me about the product. "The Breastlight is a safe light that shines through healthy tissue. When there is a questionable area the light shows as a shadow or a spot. These shadows could be the start of a cancer. The Breastlight does not diagnose, but is a preventive product that alerts women of possible problems that need to be followed up by their doctor." The Breastlight helps women become more aware of their breasts. Using it once a month allows for a woman to quickly notice any changes that should be addressed. When it comes to breast cancer Mr. Emerson pointed out the earlier detection is made, the better the chance of survival. The Breastlight can spot cancers at Stage 1.

Breastlight is not to be used instead of a mammogram. It is for the routine monthly screening that all women should be doing themselves at home. Emerson explained that clinical trials in the UK where the product was introduced in September 2008 helped ease stress of women between their mammograms. It's known that stress can be a cause of breast cancer. "Women in the trial were more at ease between their yearly and bi-yearly appointments. For women with a family history of breast cancer that stress relief in between their mammograms is important," Emerson stressed.

Breastlight is available in Canada at PharmaPlus, IDA and Guardian pharmacies. It is also available in the UK, Finland and Germany. It costs $150 CAN.
