article imageStars join together to promote volunteering

When you are watching television this week you may notice a theme throughout several of your favorite shows - philanthropy.
From NBC's "Parks and Recreation" to Fox's "Brothers" to CBS's "CSI:NY" the networks are promoting volunteerism this week.
Eight stars from ABC, CBS, FOX & NBC will be appearing together in a Public Service Announcement to encourage volunteerism airing October 19-25.
The push for philanthropy by the networks was an idea born during a summer retreat for Entertainment Industry Foundation, a charity made up of representatives from all facets of show business.
One of those at the retreat was Sherry Lansing. Lansing is a former studio executive that is now an EIF chairperson.
The networks are hoping to get the word out that volunteering is a great idea.
The Hollywood Reporter quotes Lansing:
"This has nothing to do with Democrats, Republicans or Independents," Lansing said. "Volunteerism was something everybody could agree on, because somebody wanted to work in education, somebody on the environment, others on literacy. That all comes under the umbrella of volunteerism."
The group is also designing a website iParticipate.org to make it easy to find a way to volunteer within one's community.
