As homelessness increases around the world, Belgium introduces a new Miss Homeless competition. The finalists had to compete for a place as the winner.
There seem to be a lot of pageants today, but perhaps none more strange than a recent pageant that took place in Belgium this month. As homelessness is on the increase with the global financial situation deteriorating it has never been a better time to host a Miss Homeless competition than now. That is why Belgium introduced the Miss Homeless competition. A line up of women queued to participate in the Miss Homeless competition this month.
The Express reports that unlike other pageants these women didn't have the luxury of pampering themselves beforehand. There was very little glamour involved, no make up or expensive hair designs and certainly no designer clothes. Unlike other Miss Beauty pageants this competition would completely change a homeless persons life for a year. The prize of a year's free accomodation was up for grabs to the winning woman. Eventually ten people were narrowed down to fight for their place in the final.
The competition would highlight the struggles that homeless people face on a daily basis. Competitiors had to pass through five stages of the competition involving an interview with judges where they had to talk about their own experience with homelessness. Judges had to evaluate the contestants ability to face troublesome times and come through the other side. The competition was founded more on the competitiors inner spirit and how they face adversity.
Austrian Times reports that a 58 year old woman was given the title of Miss Homeless in Belgium and receieved the prize of a fully paid apartment for an entire year. Miss Therese Van Belle won the title over nine other competitiors.
Unfortunately the other women will have to go back to life on the streets. However it is good news for the winner who gets a head start that will hopefully improve her life and get her out of the situation she finds herself in right now.
Organiser Aline Duportail spoke about how the main goals of the competition was to help someone out of a bad situation and give themselves an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and restart their life.
