The body of a newborn baby boy has been discovered in a recycling plant in Lincolnshire, UK. The body, which was wrapped in a heavily blood-stained cloth, was found inside a black bag.
Police say that on Thursday morning a worker at the Greenstar Recycling plant in Skegness was checking for glass in material brought into the site for recycling when the gruesome discovery was made.
Police are now searching for the mother as they believe she requires urgent medical attention.
Detectives involved in the case believe that the mother is from the Skegness area as household bins were collected there earlier in the week and waste delivered to the plant on Wednesday.
However they are also not discounting the fact that the mother could be from anywhere in the UK.
They also say that failed abortion is not an option that they are considering.
Post-mortem examinations have yet to reveal the baby's cause of death although evidence shows that he was not stillborn but that he probably died this week. The baby boy was white and DNA tests are being carried out to determine his nationality.
Leading the investigation is Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Gibbon, he said; "At this stage we are investigating the death of a baby who was probably no more than two or three days old. I think it's fair to say from the post-mortem (examination) that the birth was a traumatic birth and also that there was no professional presence when the baby was delivered. It's perfectly possible that this woman or girl has given birth without anybody being there or with anybody who knew what they were doing."
Police have also confirmed that part of the umbilical cord was found in the bag with the dead baby boy.
Also inside the bag police say there were a pair of women's tan coloured jogging bottoms and a pair of knickers, both heavily blood-stained. The body was wrapped in a second bag.
Detective Chief Inspector Gibbon reiterated his concern for the mother by adding; "The most important thing for me is for the mum to come forward. There's no question that she will be distressed and in need of urgent medical attention and this is a direct appeal for her to contact us so we can hopefully get to the bottom of what has happened."
Police are checking local doctor surgeries and hospitals but have also widened their search to include the NHS nationally.
The Greenstar industrial site, which handles commercial and local waste, is situated near Skegness, UK. They have, so far, declined to comment.
