Actor Woody Harrelson is not known as a scholar but he will receive an honorary degree later this week from York University in Toronto. Harrelson is set to receive a honorary doctor of letters on Saturday. The degree is for his environmental work.
The York degree is for Harrelson's work in promoting environmental causes, Alex Bilyk, director of media relations at York University, told Digital Journal. Bilyk said that a more thorough description will be available on his work when Harrelson is presented with the degree on Saturday.
Harrelson is being recognized for his work in 2001 when he lectured at college and university campuses on simple organic living. He runs the Voice Yourself site that dedicates itself to giving environmental activism a voice.
He will address the audience at the 3:30 p.m. ceremony on Saturday.
York University will also be giving Reverend Brent Hawkes, Timothy Price, Alvin Curling and Shelagh Wilkinson degrees during the event on Saturday.
Harrelson attended Hanover College in 1983, earning a degree in theater arts and English.
