Pat Magee, an Irish Republican Activist, appeared in Britain's Parliament today. In 1984 he attempted to assassinate former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Pat Magee, the man imprisoned after his 1984 hotel bombing, appeared in the British Parliament on Tuesday, according to CNN. Jo Berry, whose father was one of the five killed in the bombing, appeared alongside with Magee.
Magee denied any responsibility for the bombing, which happened on the eve of Thatcher’s speech to the Conservative Party conference. Thatcher was not hurt in the bombing.
The IRA bomber told members of Parliament, “[It’s] always a challenge to share a platform with Jo. … The challenge is I’m sharing a platform with someone whose father I killed. I’m sorry that I killed Jo’s father and I wish there had been another way.”
It was 25 years ago on Monday that Sir Anthony Berry died in the bombing.
After the bombing, the IRA published a statement, according to The Guardian, “Today we were unlucky. But remember we only have to be lucky once. You will have to be lucky always. Give Ireland peace and there will be no war.”
