Taliban terrorists are holding 10-15 hostages, including civilians, after they launched an attack on the army headquarters in Rawalpindi
The attack began around noon when around 8 heavily-armed militants drove in a white van with military license plates to the main gate of the army HQ. 10 people including four militants were killed in the shootout that lasted for an hour. Couple of hours later, Army claimed that the situation was under control.
But an hour later, gunshots were heard from a buliding near the headquarters compound with army confirming the presence of gunmen in the buliding. Major General Ather Abbas said
More than two terrorists are holding some officers hostages in a security office building . This is too sensitive an issue and I can't share details with the media right now. We are trying to save as many lives as possible
.
Security forces have surrounded the building where the militants are holed up. Pakistani TV channels were showing deferred footage from the scene as they believed aides of the terrorists could be monitoring the coverage.
The attack follows a car bombing on Friday that killed 49 in the city of Peshawar.
