The International Olympic Committee is adding the sports of golf and rugby to the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. SI.com reports that both sports were nominated in August.
Votes by IOC members were taken on Friday in Copenhagen, Denmark. The committee voted 63 to 27 to admit golf and 81 to 8 for rugby. Golf has Tiger Woods who has been the sports best player for many years to draw fans to Rio. However, Woods will be about forty years old in 2016. The sport does have other players including Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington, Steve Stricker and Sergio Garcia who have a pretty large following.
Rugby may be a popular sport in other parts of the world, but not in the United States. Rugby is a sport that was backed by the IOC. On the other hand, golf has gained in popularity in the U.S. and abroad in large part because of Tiger Woods. For more on the IOC's vote log onto
