Americans who visited The Big E in Springfield, Massachussetts, this fall found a way to snub their noses at those who promote healthy diets by devouring a 1,500-calorie "doughnut burger."
Organizers of the Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts say the high-cal burger -- which consists of a beef patty, cheese and bacon on a buttered, grilled and glazed doughnut -- was a huge hit this year, selling 1.000 burgers per day over the exhibition's 17-day run, reports the
Telegraph.
The home of the Craz-E Burger is the Big E-Z Cafe' and is one of the latest food offerings at the fair says the
Big E website.
The website describes the burger as "classic fair food."
"No single ingredient dominates the burger. They all complement each other with artistry expected from a celebrity chef. The glaze smooths over the burger and oozes into a foreign but delicious combination with the crisp of the bacon," says the fair's website.
The Big E, also known as The Eastern States Exposition, is billed as "New England's Great State Fair". It is the only cross-state agricultural fair in the United States, and serves as the de facto state fair for the six New England states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. It is the sixth largest agricultural fair in the country, and the largest in New England.
According to the Telegraph the burger may have been created by a bar owner in Decatur, Georgia who had to use glazed doughnuts at a time when he ran out of regular hamburger buns. He named his burger the
Luther Burger, after singer Luther Vandross, a fan of the concoction.
