Many environmentalists and animal rights activists are outraged by the culling of 140 kangaroos. The incident took place on one of Australia's most famous race car tracks.
The eastern grey kangaroos were removed from the Mount Panorama circuit which is located about 185 miles west of Sydney. This is to make sure that the drivers and spectators are safe at the V8 Supercar Bathurst 1000 car race next week.
There has been a history of kangaroos jumping between race cars that travel almost 200 kilometres an hour. One incident resulted in a kangaroo getting struck and killed by a race car.
Lee Rhiannon, Greens politician told
Yahoo in a statement, "The slaughter of 140 kangaroos and their joeys... for the sake of a motorcar race is a knee-jerk response that is not justified. There are other more humane and ethical ways of managing the possible safety risks."
Ray Mjadwesch, a local environmental consultant, described the cull as cruel. He also states, "It is ironic that Australia's iconic wildlife has been shot and its young disposed of in preparation for an iconic international car race."
