Startup car company Tesla has announced their newest strategy in brewing up business. The company has announced that like Best Buy's Geek Squad, their mechanics will be available to come to your home.
Tesla, who's only product is an electric roadster which sells for around $109,000 a pop said the plan is convenient for customers who won't have to bring their vehicle to a showroom which may or may not have a convenient location, while making a large network of Tesla service locations unnecessary.
While Tesla trumpets the lack of an overwhelming presence of Tesla Motors on every street corner as a good thing, considering that Tesla will charge one dollar for every round trip mile for these house calls, their customers may soon be calling for more service centers.
In large cities where Tesla already has a large presence, the house calls could certainly prove to be a boon, but in out of the way hamlets the mileage alone for services could run into the thousands alone, even before taking the actual repair costs into consideration.
Add in the fact that Tesla is a specialized car company makes it harder for consumers of their products to find mechanics outside the Tesla organization that can service the cars better, or for cheaper and the company could be painting their customers into a high cost corner.
While Tesla currently has just one model on the market, the company was approved for $465 million in loans from the U.S. Department of Energy to help it build next-generation electric cars last June.
Tesla plans to introduce an electric sedan, which it hopes to be able to offer for under $50,000 thanks to Government rebates. That car should hit the market in early 2011.
