article imageNova Scotia town's Pumpkin People 'go for the gold' Special

By Kevin Jess     Oct 3, 2009 in Entertainment
Every October the Nova Scotia town of Kentville is visited by the Pumpkin People as part of the town's Harvest Festival.
The Harvest Festival kicked off today with beautiful weather in Centre Square with hay wagon rides, live music all day, a ball hockey skills competition, candy scramble, free face painting and bounce tent, a Farmers Market and other attractions. There were also lots of dogs who came to the festival including our own Great Dane, Zeb who seemed to be an attraction all on his own. I believe I could have set up a kissing booth and charged a premium for every kiss he gave.
The local Lions Club provided a tractor pulling a train around the square much to the delight of the children who lined up for a ride.
One of the more popular attractions is the Pumpkin People workshop where you can learn how to properly put together your own pumpkin person. Everything is supplied, free of charge including cornstalks, and straw.

This year's theme for the celebration is "Pumpkin People go for the gold", in celebration of the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

Not all of the Pumpkin People were out and about today but there were quite a few around as we soon were able to see as we traveled around the town.
Spike the Pumpkin Person was on hand at Centre Square to entertain everyone with his antics.

One of my favorite Pumpkin People displays was the bobsled event. There must have been 20 or more pumpkin people standing around watching the event including security and judges. I had to hold my grandson back as he wanted to slide down the track with them.

Downhill skiing was a well attended event, as well as the ski jumping competition and no fights were reported between pumpkin people and regular folks.

All events were well attended. Other sporting events will take place over the next couple of days and will continue until October 25.
