Chicago, despite the support from Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey, has been eliminated from the 2016 Olympics hosting bid.
The United States won't be hosting the 2016 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee has
eliminated Chicago, Illinois in the first round of host city candidates. Tokyo, Japan has also been eliminated. Rio De Janiero and Madrid are left in the final running.
Chicago would have
needed 60 of the IOC's 95 votes to stay in contention.
Chicago's hopes were decimated, despite public support from some notably powerful political and celebrity figures. President Barack Obama, a former Illinois Senator, flew to Denmark to make a plea for the city.
“...visitors from all around the world feel welcome and will come away with a sense of the incredible diversity of the American people.”
He was accompanied by his wife, Michelle, who recounted stories about watching the Olympics with her dad, who has multiple sclerosis. This was the first time a current United States President did this publicly.
Oprah Winfrey also arrived in Denmark to make pleas.
